Literacy in the Digital Age

𝘒𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘬𝘦𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴.
Becoming literate is blessing and demystifying facts is the utmost need for mankind. Civilizations and old-aged traditions survived due to the existence of knowledge. It's powerful weapon that could be the agent for possibility of everything. Being literate is not enough, but becoming an educated matters a lot. Every year on Sept, 8,we commemorate National Literacy Day across the country particularly in govt and private schools to disseminate it's gist and relevance in modern era. The day marks to raise awareness and concern for literacy problems that exist within our own local communities as well as globally.
In 1966,UNESCO on September 8,celebrated its first International Literacy Day to highlight the literacy as a fundamental human right and key to personal and societal development. The day is the reminder for the ongoing need for educational reforms and resources to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to acquire basic reading and writing skills. Literacy comes from teaching and education we get at school, at home and in our surroundings. Also current years theme is Promoting multilingual education, literacy for mutual understanding and peace. Celebrating it is an occasion to mark achievements and reflect on ways to counter remaining challenges for the promotion of literacy as, an integral part of life long learning within and beyond 2030 education agenda.
Literacy is key for social-economic progress. As per the reports India's literacy rate in 2011 stands at 73percent and increased to 77.7percent in 2017-18.Covid-19 has some how disrupted the literacy level across globe.But studies have indicated that female literacy rate was substantially faster than male literacy rates. Various programs for enhancing literacy rates among adults has launched in different quarters across the country be it SBM (Shikshar Baharat Mission) TLC (Total Literacy Campaign) ULLAS and many more which unanimously defines literacy an acquiring the skills of reading, writing and arithmetic and ability to apply them to ones day to day life.
In digital era literacy serves as a foundation for lifelong learning helping people to participate more fully in their communities, improve their health outcomes and escape poverty. Learning to read and write throughout the life strengthens education and brings numerous social and economic advantage. With strenuous efforts 754 million adults world wide still lack basic literacy skills.
There is a pressing need to harness the transformative potential of literacy for promoting mutual understanding, social cohesion and peace. Being a surveyor in ULLAS i myself witnessed many cases where people feel rejoiced to enroll their credentials in enabling them to be liberates. Later they overwhelming participated in ULLAS lectures given by local volunteer trainers even in the digital world. Being literate commonly defined as the one who has ability to read and write and able to keep up with current events, communicate effectively and understand the issues that are shaping our world.
Literacy is essential, it helps you to develop and communicate, having literacy skills to read, write and speak and listen are vital for success. If you find these things hard, then you struggle to learn. It affects your confidence and self-esteem. Literacy skills themselves are expanding and evolving as people engage more and more with information and learning through digital technology. Learning to read and write can make a big difference in people's lives at multiple levels. Over the years, people living in farflung areas weren't much educated but were able to read daily newspapers which depicts their literacy level. Literate people are generally more able to access information about current events, makeup their own mind and engage in different political process. Parents who can read or write are more likely to realize their kids to school rather than work. So becoming literate is the need of the hour in contemporary world.
