PUBG: A Burgeoning Menace

July 08, 2020 | Arif Nabi

Where the smart phones have revolutionized the modern society and made our life easy and smooth going. At the same time these gadgets have made our life shiftless and highly dependable. We can’t now think of our life without these smart phones. Before we go out for some work, we first make sure our cell phones are with us. These phones have become part and parcel of our life. We have become so much attached to these phones, that being without it for sometime seems like we are missing some of our essential body part.
Primarily developed for communication among the people, mobile phones are now being misused in various ways. These have become a reason for a lot of trouble in our society. Playing futile online games in this digital era is a common trend seen among our youth nowadays. Rather than conceiving it boon and using it for genuine purposes, our youths have thought cell phones to be used for playing games only and nothing else. Some consider games as a mood changer; others thought these a stress buster. But the effect they inflict on the user is far more alarming than being a temporary stress reliever. It is a matter of grave concern that our youth have been addicted to a good number of such online games. Of these games, PUBG is the most notorious one.
PUBG (Players Unknown’s battleground) is a multiplayer online video game developed by South Korean company Blue hole. First released for Microsoft windows in 2017, its android versions came in 2018. Shortly after its release, it got a huge number of downloads in a brief period of time, winning the accolade of ‘Best game of the year 2018.’ Battlegrounds are thought to be the most online played video games of all time. As of 2019, PUBG mobile has reached 555 million players worldwide. The mobile games’ largest market is in India with around 116 million downloads, followed by china 108 million and USA 42 million.
Since its inception, PUBG mobile has been drifting a lot of people towards itself each day. It has gained immense importance from the last two years. It is the burgeoning menace of our society-that if not tackled on time, may prove harmful for our young generation. Youths are considered gems of a developed nation, if they are not properly guided and taught, we may witness a downfall to our society. Not only young and unmarried people, but juveniles and married ones-that owe children- are addicted to this nuisance. Nowadays, there is only one talk among our youths and that is of PUBG. Whether at home or out, they have nothing else to discuss and care, other than PUBG. During the ongoing lockdown, they are even more addicted to the game and spend most of the time playing the game. They go to bed playing the game and wake up doing the same thing. Others don’t sleep at all. They are blindly sinking into this filth. PUBG is consuming their time, energy and health. It has been badly affecting our young generation in a variety of ways-about which the gamer may be totally oblivious of;
1) Violence: PUBG is a game of violence wherein the content is just firing and killing the opponents. This triggers a burst of aggressive behaviors and strong emotions in a player’s mind. They may gradually start applying such behaviors in real life. These mental states are harmful for a human body. Recently, several PUBG playing children have suffered cardiac arrest and the doctors have attributed it to the flow of these strong emotions, though they had no reported history of any cardiac ailment.
2) Physical health: As we all know physical exercise is good for a healthy body. Just sitting and playing PUBG all day is proving injurious to the physical health of the gamer. It tends to make the player sluggish. Headaches, fatigue and migraines is common now in PUBG players. In addition, continuous screen watching and late night play may take a toll on player’s eyesight. A highly addicted gamer also deprives himself from enjoying a goodnight’s sleep, which is also not good for physical and mental health.
3) Socially less active: Playing PUBG curtails the activity of a player. It restricts him to the home most of the time. As a result they grow becoming socially less active. They suffer easily from society related issues and are not able to handle the social situations.
4) Mental health: Like physical health, PUBG affects the mental health of the player as well. A PUBG player gets easily irritated suffers from anxiety and other mental health related problems. Not only are games like PUBG hindering mental and emotional development of a user, but are also posing life threats now.
5) Gaming addiction: A person playing PUBG may be unconscious of this habit. Once he goes deep into playing the game, he becomes severely addicted to it. This addiction manifests when the player is not playing the game, he feels uneasy and uncomfortable until he picks up the mobile and starts the game over again. Sometimes the player is so much absorbed in the PUBG that he forgets to take his meals and carry out other routines.
Like any habit, the habit of PUBG once developed is difficult to forgo, but is however not completely insurmountable. There are many ways that can prove helpful to overcome the menace of PUBG. The foremost I would suggest is the willingness of a person. If one is willing, one can find ample reasons and ways to get over the habit. Habits are broken not in one go, but gradually. It may take some time to put an end to the habit. A gamer can reduce the playing time each day.If he is tempted to mobile phone at home, he can go out, enjoy a walk into the nature or carry out his favorite hobby. He may also visit the relatives and friends and instead of spending time on PUBG he can utilize that in developing the relation with them. The earlier we stop this menace, the better it is for our youth and society as a whole.
