Sarpanchs, Panchs in J&K to get security, insurance cover

‘HM promises restoration of mobile services in 15-20 days’

The recently elected representatives of Panchayat Raj institutions in Jammu and Kashmir will get police security and an insurance coverage of Rs two lakh each, reports said.
This assurance was given by Union home minister Amit Shah to a delegation of sarpanch (village head) and panch (panchayat member) from Jammu and Kashmir who met him on Tuesday.
"We have requested the home minister to provide us security and he has assured us that the administration will provide us security," said Mir Junaid, a Sarpanch from Kupwara.
Another Sarpanch, Zuber Nishad Bhat, who is from Harvan in Srinagar district, said the home minister also assured them that insurance coverage of Rs two lakh will be provided to every panch and sarpanch.
Bhat also said the home minister told the delegation that mobile phone services in Jammu and Kashmir will be restored in the next 15-20 days.
Junaid said the home minister told the panch and sarpanch that, as promised on the floor of Parliament, statehood of Jammu and Kashmir will be restored when the situation becomes normal.
Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held last year after a gap of six years.
Jammu and Kashmir is currently under President's rule. The state Assembly was dissolved on November 2018 after the ruling coalition between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) fell apart in June 2018.
The Valley has remained under lockdown for more than four weeks since the abrogation of the Article 370 by the BJP-led Centre and a sweeping crackdown on not just militants but even mainstream parties like National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party.
An array of political leaders, businessmen, lawyers, activists and others have been confined to Centaur Hotel on the banks of Dal Lake which has been declared as a sub-jail by the state administration.
No announcement has yet been made on the charges under which the mainstream leaders and others have been arrested, and whether and when they will be released.
Earlier, the daughter of Mehbooba, Iltija Mufti, had written to the home minister that she was fearing for her life and that she was being denied permission to meet her mother who she said has been confined to ‘one room’.
