The Supreme Court on Wednesday took strong note of rampant illegal sand mining in Rajasthan and directed the state government, its collectors and SPs to take immediate steps to stop it.
A bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde directed the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) to go into the question of illegal mining and suggest measures to stop it in Rajasthan and apprise it about the move.
The Apex Court was hearing a petition seeking to allow the leases for sand (bajri) mining to continue in Rajasthan before ban was imposed on sand mining.
The petitioner alleged that illegal mining has become more rampant after the ban was imposed.
The CEC has been given 6 weeks to carry out the job assigned to it. The Apex Court asked Rajasthan government to file an Action Taken Report (ATR) in 4 weeks.
