Separatists remain caged in Kashmir

There was still no relief for separatist leaders, including chairmen of both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, in the Kashmir Valley where a general strike against the death of three youths in security force firing in Badgam paralysed normal life Wednesday.
However, the separatists are under house arrest or detained in jails following election boycott call by them in the valley, where by-poll in Srinagar and Anantnag parliamentary constituencies will be held on April 9 and 12 respectively.
Official sources said restrictions on separatists had been imposed to prevent any law and order problem.
Hurriyat (G) spokesperson Aiyaz Akbar said Geelani remained under house arrest since May last year and he was not even allowed to offer Friday prayers in a mosque since then.
He said a large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed outside the Hyderpora residence of Geelani who was arrested a number of time for defying restrictions.
