A new phase has begun as Kashmir formally got its Press Club after the building was handed over to the adhoc body of the Kashmir Press Club Society. This is indeed a historic development and an appreciable step taken by chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti. The role and efforts of Director Information and Public Relations Muneer-ul-Islam need to be appreciated. Now that the government has taken this initiative after the demand was put up by the journalists for a long time, the institution should flourish as a welfare measure for the journalists working in trouble-torn Kashmir region. The adhoc body of the Press Club should immediately start streamlining the functioning of the club and the members should be cleared after a proper scrutinisation. However the smooth transition of a full-fledged elected body of the Press Club should come to fruition within six months. While government has said that it has taken several measures for the welfare of the journalists the opening of the club should be seen as the first reformative measure for the journalists. The adhoc body should study the models of the well established press clubs across the world and try to bring in some change on the ground. In a trouble-torn place where huge chunk of journalists lack basic requirements, such measures are a big relief for the journalists of the region. With the opening of the club, it should also open other measures for the journalists. The journalists covering the conflict have been victims of Kashmir situation. In this situation, journalists should be provided with proper safety cover. The Kashmir Press Club must keep all the reformative measures of the journalists in mind. Although it took government over 50 years to realize that Kashmir needs a Press Club like Jammu the decision needs to be welcomed. The press has faced many hardships imposed by the circumstances in the troubled region and doing the basic job has not been without challenges. There are immortal sacrifices which have been rendered by the doyens in the field whose contribution needs to be extolled and asserted in all forums. Let the journalism flourish and opening a Press Club is just a beginning—a small milestone. The path and the road ahead is a long one that needs to be treading without any pause. Let the journey continue.
