6th skiing course concludes at IISM Gulmarg

Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) completed its 6th ski course at Gulmarg on Monday in which 14 local youth sponsored by J&K Scouts and Guides also took part.
As per the statement,more than 80 students including students from all parts of the country and local Kashmir youth graduated in an impressive ceremony at IISM Gulmarg.
Shabir Ahmad Wani, Asstt. Director, Youth Services & Sports Council was the chief guest and G. M. Dar, Tourist Officer was guest of honor who gave away the prizes to the winners of different ski events.
JS Dhillon, the Principal of IISM welcomed the chief guest and briefed him about the various activities being undertaken by the Institute.
He said Institute has provided the best platform to the youth of the Nation especially the youth of Kashmir to not only learn the skill of skiing but also develop their overall personality. “Institute trains hundreds of youth every year. These courses are very useful for the youth as it give them opportunity to build their career in the sports of skiing at National and International levels and also generate huge employment opportunities for the local youth as guides or Instructors to the tourist.,“he said.
14 youth form Kashmir were sponsored by J&K Scouts and Guides under the leadership of Farooq Renzu Shah.
In a separate function, he honored the Scouts who completed the course and gave them medals of success.
Shabir Wani said it was a great honor for him to be the chief guest at IISM which is his ‘Alma mater.’
He was the student at the IISM in Mid seventies. He said the Institute under the leadership of Dhillon has gained new heights and is now one of the best ski schools in the South East Asia.
He said the facilities provided by the Institute are world class and it has best equipment and a centrally heated building. Wani complimented the students for successful completion of the ski course and appealed them to be the ambassadors of not only of IISM but of the whole Kashmir. He said Kashmir is a paradise which is very safe for tourist and they must come again for advance courses.
Students who under event the course were very happy and praised the excellent facilities of training and administration provided to them by IISM. The Institute is planning various summer adventures courses in the coming months.
IISM was set up at Gulmarg by the Government of India in 1969 with the aim to introduce adventure sports among the youth and to promote tourism industry.
The Institute imparts technical training and conducts courses such as snow skiing at Gulmarg, water skiing in beautiful lakes of Kashmir Valley and Tracking/Mountaineering programmes in Kashmir. The Institute has qualified Ski instructors, most of whom have done advance training courses abroad. The institute has latest and best imported equipments to cater for need of 700 tourists at a time.
Having a principal from Army background facilitates in disciplined and orderly conduct of the courses, which further enhances the benefits of attending such courses. These courses are sponsored by Army, which provides the individual with different career options. Presently scouts from different part of the valley are being facilitated in skiing course in IISM.
The institute employs scores of youth from valley who besides serving the young talent are able to make their both ends meet.
Besides the youth who undergo through different courses there are trained in other skills so that they experience can be utilized for rescue operations in case of any natural disaster.
The courses in IISM makes an individual proficient in life saving/ survival skills in the mountains. These survival skills helps an individual in handling emergency / Critical situation effectively. They put the individual into highly stressed situations to simulate a combat environment and teaches the Individual how to react in critical situations. The knowledge and skill gained during courses makes the individual more robust and confident.
