A global problem

October 14, 2019 |

New Delhi has been quite vociferous at the United Nations in defending the move to abrogate the special status of Jammu and Kashmir while mincing no words in speaking out against the issue of terrorism. Both the strategies have earned wider support from global community. Regardless of the Pakistan’s utterances, terrorism is not just one country’s problem. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been stating all along in these years, it is indeed the biggest challenge facing the humanity. If left un-tackled, the monster of terrorism will annihilate all of us. Following the exit of the USSR from Afghanistan, the entire South Asian region particularly Pakistan descended into chaos. The first impact was felt in Kashmir itself where an armed insurgency broke out which soon took a vicious form, leading to killings of thousands and the tragic exodus of Kashmiri Pandits. However, the Kashmir insurgency was domestic in nature and it had no connections with transnational outfits such as Al Qaeda. Then 9/11 happened, changing the whole security map of South Asia. Not only was Pakistan and China drawn into the events following the collapse of Twin Towers, the former, using its old connections with the insurgent groups in Afghanistan such as Taliban, began using them for maintaining ‘strategic depth’. While China may have raised Kashmir at the UN by urging India to refrain from ‘changing the status quo unilaterally’, Beijing has its own concerns about the militant outfits operating in Pakistan, some of whom are managed and funded by the various arms of ‘Deep State’ in Islamabad. Chinese are aware that the simmering situation in Xinjiang which often boil down into knife and crude bomb attacks on innocent Chinese citizens has a Pakistan connection too. The members of Islamic Movement of Turkestan, which has been claiming these attacks, have been shielded by groups in Afghanistan patronized by Islamabad. Despite all the war rhetoric of Pakistan’s PM, Beijing would not like any escalation of the situation at this time when it has gone ahead by taking the multibillion China Pakistan Economic Corridor to entirely new level. Hence, it is the right time that the world unites in using Islamabad’s ‘all-weather friend’ and putting pressure on the country to shut down the terrorism factory forever. Kashmir has been a regional quagmire. China has been under pressure to avoid confronting New Delhi on the issue while also placating Islamabad at the same time by making noises here and there. However, it is in the interest of all the regional countries to act decisively against terror.
