Amid tensions, Prez Kovind to visit Ladakh

President Ram Nath Kovind’s first official visit to Ladakh later this month comes at a time when tensions between India and China have led to border stand-offs and will be seen as a morale booster for the armed forces. Kovind will present colours to five battalions of the Ladakh Scouts, an infantry regiment of the Indian Army.
Rashtrapati Bhavan officials said it would be a day-long visit. Presidential colours are presented to a regiment only after “a deep selection process” that examines its history of valour, sacrifice and traditions over the years.
The visit to Ladakh is significant; coming days after the Army foiled an incursion bid by Chinese soldiers. Sources added that the trip was being seen as part of PM Narendra Modi’s focus on J&K.Interestingly , Modi also visited the state at the start of his term in 2014.
The Ladakh Scouts, which has five battalions with almost 900 soldiers each, became a regular Army regiment in 2001 after its performance in the Kargil war.
