Avalanche claims another life in North Kashmir

An elderly person was killed after a snow avalanche hit him in a village near the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector in north Kashmir district of Baramulla, official sourcs said.
They said an elderly person Fatah Mohammad Mughal was repairing water supply to his house at village Lachipora, Uri, about 100 km from here when an avalanche hit him
However, rescue operation by locals was immediately launched and Mughal was shifted to local medical centre from where he was referred to Army hospital. However, he was declared brought dead, they said.
Four members of a family a couple, their son and daughter were killed after their house came under a huge snow avalanche in Gurez sector of Bandipora district on January 25. However, a son of the couple had a miraculous escape after he was thrown out of the house when the avalanche hit while another daughter had gone to a relatives house.
Meanwhile, authorities have already issued avalanche warning in upper reaches in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region.
People living in upper heights have been directed to remain indoor because of avalanche threat following heavy to very heavy fresh snowfall during the past three days in the Kashmir valley, were about 50 hours, majority of them in Badgam district have been damaged since January 25.
There is avalanche threat in the upper reaches in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region during the next 24 hours following heavy snowfall, officials said.
They said movement in snowbound hilly and sloppy areas is not advisable during next 24 hours, they said.
