Expressing shock over reports that media has been barred from covering Legislature proceedings starting tomorrow to discuss and pass Goods and Services Tax (GST), lone CPI(M) MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami today said the ban is draconian and highly unacceptable. A session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislature will commence from tomorrow to discuss and pass GST, which was rolled out in the rest of the country from July 1. Mr Tarigami said barring media from covering proceedings on this important public issue will encourage rumour mongering and is bound to prove counter-productive. “The ban on press is draconian and highly unacceptable, which will encourage rumour mongering and is bound to prove counter-productive,” he said, adding that in the interest of the assembly session, media must be allowed to cover the proceedings. He urged the Speaker to intervene in the matter and allow press coverage of proceedings in transparent manner consistent with the past practice.
