China’s Intransigence

October 14, 2021 |

After trespassing and martyring Indian soldiers in Galwan valley of Ladakh and repeated intrusions in Sikkim sector, China has now raised its objection to Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu’s Arunachal Pradesh visit which reflects Beijing’s intransigence despite New Delhi’s peaceful diplomatic overtures. India needs to learn lessons from the past when it comes to engaging with Chinese Communist leadership even as both the neighbours have maintained sanctity of Line of Actual Control to the extent that no major armed skirmishes has taken place in decades after 1962 Sino-Indo war which took everyone by surprise as there were cries of Hindi-Chini bhai bhai before the war as casualties were innumerable on Indian side since there were no preparations from this side while Chinese had been advancing on number of sectors in Himalayan foothills. China’s objection to V-P’s visit stands no ground as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has from 2014 pledged to restore the glory of North Eastern states by developing the region and empowering its people who were neglected for decades. China routinely objects to Indian leaders' visits to Arunachal Pradesh to buttress its stand. Arunachal Pradesh is India’s integral and inalienable part as is Ladakh where soldiers are on high alert for more than a year now. The India-China boundary dispute covers 3,488 km along the Line of Actual Control. India has maintained that it was necessary to resolve the remaining issues along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh for progress in the bilateral relations. Chinese reacted days after India and China failed to make any headway in resolving the 17-month standoff in the remaining friction points in eastern Ladakh as Indian Army reaffirmed that its ‘constructive suggestions’ at the 13th round of military talks were neither agreeable to the Chinese side nor Beijing could provide any "forward-looking" proposals. The sustained stand-off could jeopardize peace in the Himalayan region and disturb the fragile environment as massive military build-up on both sides of LAC could result in the situation turning volatile at any given point of time since troops are in eyeball to eyeball position. Both the nations have global position in terms of population and power, militarily and economically and confrontation if any would destabilize regional peace and stability and push billions to quandary of poverty. The world is slowly defeating Coronavirus which devastated health and decimated finances of all over a period of two years and any misadventure or misunderstanding between two powerful nations could spill over in global geodynamics and spell doom over the world.
