COVID-19 and its impact on the travel and tourism sector will leave an impression as far as people's choices on travel and tourism are concerned, at least in the short term. The “Survey on Understanding the Impact of COVID 19 & Resultant Lockdown on Tourism & Hospitality Sector" conducted by CII Northern Region across 7 States and 3 Union Territories in North India, shows us the results which are on expected lines in current scenario.
Around two-thirds of the respondents have indicated that they are likely to travel within three months after the lockdown. Domestic travel is the overwhelming choice of respondents with “Only International Travel” getting around 1.4 per cent preference. Shortly after the virus is contained, international travel may not be a priority for the majority of the respondents due to COVID-19 impact. Challenges will be greater for businesses such as airports, cruise lines and airlines, which tend to attract large crowds in relatively small and confined spaces.
The new normal, as being discussed in terms of social distancing, hygiene standards etc. do get reflected in the survey results. Hygiene Standards become the single most important criteria in deciding the place of stay. It was always important but the Survey underlines its predominance in the minds of travellers. Use of Protective Gear comes across as the most important precaution that tourists would like to take during their travel, with Arogya Setu App being the preferred choice of around one fifth of respondents. The impact of Covid in a particular place will have a significant bearing while selecting the destination.
The survey revealed that people are still looking at Tourism as a means of rejuvenation, which translates to potential opportunities once people learn to live with COVID-19.
Mr Nikhil Sawhney, Chairman, CII Northern Region while sharing his views on the survey outcomes said, “Given the nature of Tourism sector, it is first to be impacted and last to recover. The sector generates mass employment, even in remote areas, and it is critical that Government looks at the package to cover Tourism and Hospitality sector under various policies announced”. The role of the Tourism sector is critical in boosting the economy of the nation / state, creating employment, generating revenue through tax collections etc. “Tourism sector has been impacted worldwide but it is important how the sector reinvents itself to bounce back faster”, he added.
Mr Ankur Bhatia, Chairman, CII Northern Region Committee on Tourism & Hospitality, said “The current crisis is truly unprecedented both in nature and scale and there is no historic knowledge or experience to handle crisis of such magnitude. The Survey results will be helpful to Tourism & Hospitality industry while taking decisions in its journey of from survival to revival.”
This Survey was conducted across seven States and three Union Territories of North India – including Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
