Curfew restrictions have been imposed in major areas of downtown and Shehar-e-Khas (SeK) in Srinagar, where separatists had announced to hold a rally on the death anniversaries of Mirwaiz Moulvi Mohammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone today.
However, District Magistrate (DM), Srinagar, said that restrictions have been imposed in areas falling under five police stations in the downtown and SeK as a precautionary measure. The venue of the rally “ Eidgah Martyrs Graveyard” in the downtown has been sealed and a large number of security forces and state police personnel deployed to foil any assembly of people there.
However, a UNI correspondent who visited the area saw road from Eidgah to S K Institute of Medical Institute (SKIMS) was through though only those going to hospital were being allowed after properly checking their documents. Nobody, even mediapersons were being allowed to go the area where the Mirwaiz and Lone are buried.
Mirwaiz Farooq was assassinated by some unidentified gunmen on this day at his Nigeen house in 1990, while Lone was shot dead at Eidgah when he was leaving for his home after paying tributes to the Mirwaiz in 2002. The Mirwaiz is father of chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq while Lone is father of senior separatist leader Bilal Gani Lone and minister in the PDP and BJP coalition government Sajjad Gani Lone.
