Day 120: Kashmir’s Journalist Hub without internet facilities

December 03, 2019 | BK NEWS DESK/SRINAGAR

Despite repeated requests and protests from Journalist fraternity over communication clampdown, the broadband service at Press Enclave Srinagar has not been restored.
Kashmir’s media hub has been witnessing internet blackout from past 120 days. Pertinently, authorities gave this media hub last preference when it came for the restoration of landline phone service.
In absence of internet service, Journalists are finding it hard to perform their duties. It has become a routine for Journalists to visit ‘Media Facilitation Centre’ set up by Department of Information and Public Relations for them where they upload content for their newspapers.
Kashmir Press Club recently held a peaceful protest urging upon the government to restore internet service for them. They said Government is forcing them to visit Media Facilitation Centre set up in a private hotel which according to them is a monitoring centre without any privacy.
“We were excepting that authorities will at least restore the cell phones of accredited journalists but nothing was done despite repeated requests. It’s shocking that Journalists are being pushed to wall,” said a Journalist to KNT.
