The recent developments in Jammu and Kashmir have stirred a hornet’s nest. While New Delhi will be satisfied with the way most of the countries reacted to the annulment of J&K’s special status and division of the turmoil-wracked region into two union territories, there have been a number of setbacks as well. From the first of its kind ‘closed door’ recent meeting on Kashmir at the United Nations to the verbal skirmishes between New Delhi and Beijing, the ‘big move’ of the central government has evoked criticism from many quarters. But perhaps, barring statements of global political leaders, nothing has been more influential than the US Congressional hearing on Kashmir. Over the past few weeks, a number of witnesses have given testimonies before a commission about the situation in Kashmir. While Kashmiri American Diaspora has stepped up its efforts to shed light on the past three decades of turmoil, a group of Kashmiri Pandits have stretched the history a bit further by invoking the 5000 year old history of the dawn of the Hindu civilization and its imprints on Kashmir. To this end, the argument of the opposition leaders that the BJP has internationalized the Kashmir issue does hold some water. It is for the first time in more than six decades that the UN held a closed door meeting on Kashmir. It is for the first time that China has objected to what New Delhi terms as “internal matter”. It is also for the first time perhaps that a serving US president offered to mediate on Kashmir if the two nuclear armed South Asian rivals asked him to. There is no doubt that the revocation of the Article 370 has attracted global attention. But it should not worry the country’s leadership. For a long time, the truth of what has been happening in Kashmir has been blurred under the semantics and political economy of conflict. It is hence good that a debate is taking place globally on how Kashmir has come to the situation where it becomes necessary to jail an entire spectrum of political leadership, businessmen, youngsters, elderly, sick and even handicapped to declare normalcy. From the political accords and agreements between the two rival countries to the tragic situation that Kashmir finds itself in today, the veil of mystery and confusion clouding the history of the Himalayan region should be removed.
