Travelling has become a tedious task in Srinagar as almost all the roads are filled with potholes. The defunct drainage adds to the accumulation of water on roads, resulting in cracks in the newly laid macadam.
Vital road links from city centre to Soura , Hazratbal, Batamaloo, Qamarwari and Nowgam are in bad shape.
Other road stretches, including Rawalpora-Rangreth, Nowgam-Natipora road, Qamarwari-Soura, Tengpora-Batamaloo are dotted with potholes causing inconvenience to commuters.
“It is impossible to travel on potholed city roads during the night,” said a businessman in Lal Chowk.
The damaged roads also lead to frequent traffic jams across city.
Drivers say their vehicles usually get damaged while plying on dilapidated roads and fuel consumption also goes up.
Students, employees and businessmen, meanwhile, accused the government of doing nothing to upgrade the roads.
Due to bad roads, it takes more than usual time to cover a particular stretch, they said.
“Every day, I have to listen from my boss for getting late to the office,” said, a private bank employee, who has to travel from Hyderpora to Lal Chowk.
“The road is severely damaged, resulting in frequent traffic jams. Despite leaving home an hour before the office time, I get late,” he said.
A majority of roads in Srinagar, which were macadamised last year, are in bad shape giving commuters a tough time.
The authorities are yet to take repair works, even as Durbar Move offices are scheduled to reopen in Srinagar next month.
