Dilapidated uptown roads irk shopkeepers

May 16, 2019 | UNI/SRINAGAR

Scores of shopkeepers on Wednesday protested against bad road conditions at Natipora in uptown Srinagar.
The shopkeepers hit the streets on Wednesday morning at Natipora and blocked the road leading to Chanapora bypass and Nowgam bypass, resulting in suspension of traffic for some time.
Shouting slogans against the administration, the protestors demanded that the road be repaired immediately without any further delay.
“The road stretch between Natipora and Ramgarh is in a very bad condition… it seems that no one is bothered to repair it as the road has no VIP movement. Our vehicles have been damaged due to bad road and at the same time our health is also being affected due to the dust,” the protesting shopkeepers told UNI.
They said if the road is not repaired at the earlier they will intensify their protest. The protestors later dispersed peacefully after assurance by local administration that the issue will be taken up with the concerned department.
Similar, views were expressed by people living in nearby Azad Basti locality. “Our road was fine, but few months back a government department dug the road to lay some pipers and then left it without repairing,” Ghulam Mohammad, a resident of Azad Basti, told UNI.
