Human race is complex and pervasive. One man’s actions affect all of us regardless of which part of the world we live in. It is in the nature of humans to have great dreams for a happier, fairer and more humane life where social tensions don’t exist and financial constraints are a thing of past. To address these complex issues, providing good education to our younger generation is a major challenge that seeks active and collaborative effort of all sections of society. To improve the state of our world and to derive maximum out of human potential and capabilities, education has a central role. It is crucial for allowing people to responsibly participate in a democratic society and to help in growing its discourses and its institutions. Platforms to participate and deliberate should be available to all, regardless of their political or financial status. The essential elements of education include open knowledge, skills and positive attitudes that enable students to become fully empowered when there is an open flow of ideas. Students should be empowered to use critical thought and analysis to evaluate ideas, problems and formulate policies. They need to develop a scientific curiosity and work for the welfare of others. At the centre of their pursuits should be the common good, the dignity and rights of individuals and especially minorities. Unfortunately, in our part of the world where ancients myths are being peddled as facts and there is talk of plastic surgery existing in times of Vedas, education, coupled with access to technology, is fast turning into a dangerous tool to blend facts with fiction. These acts are pushing human race into a confrontational course. An alternate reality is being projected by the political leaders which is faithfully reproduced by the stenographers of the ruling party in the media. There is no critical thought. In fact, such line of thinking is discouraged and those who challenge the false notion with facts are deemed to be unpatriotic and anti-nationals. Education helps citizens in developing creativity and independent thought. It also enables young citizens to deal with the issues of unemployment, migration, terrorism, social inequalities and political extremism. Interestingly, educational research has been shown to play a key role in the well-being of a society and keeping up the social and emotional competencies of people. The human mind must be allowed to explore its capabilities. Deeming independent thought as unpatriotic and anti-national is tantamount to doing great disservice to humanity.
