Doda's documentary “Only if the baby cries” shines at Ji.Hlava Film Festival

In a remarkable achievement for the region, the documentary Only if the Baby Cries… has won the coveted Short Joy competition at the prestigious Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival. This recognition highlights not only the creative talent emerging from Doda but also sheds light on the unique stories of the village of Dhadkai, known for its significant population of deaf and mute individuals.
Directed by Shadab Farooq, the documentary captures the everyday lives and challenges faced by the residents of Dhadkai, providing a poignant look into their world.
The film’s cinematography, led by Sahib Syed Goni, beautifully illustrates the landscape and the intimate moments of the villagers, enhancing the narrative's emotional depth. Anzer Ayoob served as the Location Manager and Researcher, ensuring that the documentary authentically represents the community.
The project was produced by Rajiv Mehrotra, with executive production by Aparna Sanyal, and sound design by Rinoy Gomez, whose expertise in sound mixing contributed significantly to the film's immersive quality.
“This documentary is a testament to the incredible stories waiting to be told from our region,” said Ayoob.
“Winning at an international festival validates our efforts and highlights the rich cultural tapestry of Doda.”
The Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, held annually in the Czech Republic, is one of the most prestigious documentary film festivals in the world, drawing entries from across the globe. This year’s competition included 22 films, making the win even more significant for the Doda team.
The film is currently available for viewing on the Dafilms platform until November 2nd, offering audiences a chance to engage with the heartfelt narratives of Dhadkai village.
Local leaders have expressed their pride in this achievement. MLA Doda Mehraj Malik congratulated the entire team, particularly highlighting the contributions of Anzer Ayoob, Shadab Farooq, and Syed Sahib Goni. “Their dedication and talent have not only brought honor to our region but have also shown the world the richness of our culture,” he stated.
