Drug Addiction: A Talk on Ways Forward

October 17, 2020 | Amanullah Khan

Addiction is defined as a chronic relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences. It is considered a brain disease because it changes the brain, changes its Structure these brain changes can be long lasting and can lead to the harmful behaviors seen in people who abuse drugs. Addiction is a lot like other diseases, such as heart disease. Both disrupt the normal, healthy functioning of the underlying organ, have serious harmful consequences, and are preventable and treatable, And this addiction or simply the mood-altering psychoactive substances has been now part of lives of most of the youngesters in Kashmir, one day or other we hear about drug trafficking in which drug peddlers mostly young ones are involved and this is alarming at high in whole Jammu and Kashmir in which a variety of psychoactive substances, like alcohol, cannabis and opioids is being used. Before treating and looking for the policies and ways forward to stop this menace all I tried to find the reasons that why do people take drugs? and started to quote all these variety of reasons here:

First, may be people take drugs to feel good because most abused drugs produce intense feelings of pleasure. This initial sensation of euphoria is followed by other effects, which may differ with the type of drug used. For example, with stimulants such as cocaine, the “high” is followed by feelings of power, self-confidence, and increased energy. 2nd To feel better, Some people who suffer from social anxiety, stress-related disorders, and depression may begin abusing drugs in an attempt to lessen feelings of distress. Stress can play a major role in beginning drug use. 3rd to do better, some people feel pressure to chemically enhance or improve their cognitive or athletic performance, which can play a role in initial experimentation and thus continued abuse of drugs. 4th Curiosity and “because others are doing it.” In this respect adolescents or school going children are particularly vulnerable because of the strong influence of peer pressure. Teens are more likely than adults to engage in risky or daring behaviors to impress their friends and express their independence from parental and social rules. There may be a number of other reasons for the addiction but instead to discuss them here I would like to talk to a addicted friends and convey my massage:
Dear friend you at all are not a bad person, but this disease you are involved in makes you to lose control. We know Alcohol and drugs do it and that too when you drink too much or use drugs in excess you do and say things that you normally don't my dear this addiction is making you mean or stupid and not only you but alot of many just like you let me tell u that there are a lot many who just tried to check the flavour or show their friends that he/she can handle it well and that was enough to get them in trap those are not limited but I’ll bet there are some in your vicinity at school at your residence at your work place but no body knows no body pays attention because they themselves don't care themselves don't pay attention themselves don't want to get out from this so you really aren’t alone in this and to some extent only it is not your fault not only you are the reason of this destruction but all those who are providing it to you who are making business of it on cost of your life are very much responsible but the sad part is you, that you are allowing them to play on your head, you are not doing anything to stop it whereas you are the only one who can stop them from doing business to your life you are the only one to help yourself and your little siblings who might be the next victims of this destruction. So it is now you who has to talk about the problem care about this all because as I told you, you are the only one who has to get out from this menace to save your life and thousands of others who are about to get into this you CAN talk about the problem share the problem and for that you need to find someone you trust who will talk to you. It could be a teacher, a coach, a friend your doctor, a big brother or sister, or someone else who will listen to you. These are the “safe people” in your life. There is a groups and organisations who are there for you waiting for you to help you out, and with your zeal and ardor hope this beautiful valley will be free from this increasing menace and let's remember that the consequences of drug abuse are vast and varied and affect people of all ages. Let's say NO to drugs and YES to life.
