Dusty roads posing serious respiratory risk among commuters

The delay in repair of roads across city is posing a major health risks to the commuters, with experts warning rise in respiratory ailments.
Following 2014 September floods, the roads in flood hit areas opened up with numerous potholes.
Though, the authorities temporarily repaired major cracks and potholes on some city roads but it couldn’t sustain the inclement weather during last two years.
These roads due to the lack of macademisation pose serious health risks by developing chest and respiratory related complication among the people.
Doctors say that the dusty roads can increase health risks in people especially those living in flood affected areas.
“Already it is an allergic season, further the dust which the roads are emitting in Srinagar can lead to many respiratory diseases. Basically the dust is due to the recent floods. Diseases like lower respiratory tract infection can become common besides asthma attacks among the people who are already suffering from it,” Dr. Riyaz , a physician said.
He said that the chest diseases hospital is receiving many patients who are complaining about the chest infections due to the intake of polluted air.
“We are receiving huge number for patients’ areas suffering from chest infection. The polluted air can lead to complication among TB patients also,” Dr. Riyaz said.
He said the people should adopt precautionary measures as the conditions could worsen in summer if roads are not repaired.
“Right now the repairing of roads is the major precautionary measure which the government should adopt. Further people should wear dust masks to prevent any sort of chest infection,” Dr. Riyaz said.
In Srinagar, roads in areas like Barzulla, Qamarqari, Magarmal Bagh , Lalbazar are in dilapidated condition which according to the people have become main reason for the erratic traffic jams.
“Here pesky traffic jams has become order of the day. People often get stuck here for long time. Due to the huge and numerous potholes, people take to other link routes which result prolonged traffic snarls,” said Farooq Ahmad
Not only locals, the dilapidated roads is also annoying the tourists who visit here from different places.
“The roads especially from Awantipora to Srinagar is pathetic. Tourists often complain about uncomfortableness due to the bad roads. They praise our landscape and climate but often get annoyed by the bad road conditions. We have taken the matter with the government and hopefully the road connectivity will be enhanced,” said President, Travel Agents association of Kashmir, Mufasir Ahmad.
