Effect of 2g Internet and Repeated Net Ban on Online Education

September 24, 2020 | Asrar Ul Haque

Effect of nCovid-19 is increasing day by day throughout the world. Number of positive cases is rising exponentially. Internet is an important part of modern society. Students throughout the world have been relying on this only source for their education. In India, students also are continuously taking part in online education including Jammu and Kashmir.

But what about internet speed, as whole world is enjoying 4g internet service china is having trial run of 5g internet but Jammu and Kashmir is still hung up on 2g. Recently only in two districts (Ganderbal and Udhampur) proved to be lucky as 4g connectivity was restored there. This doesn’t mean that now students from all over J&K will travel to these districts for education via online system.
Teachers are builders of future but what about teachers of Jammu and Kashmir. No doubt they also give their best, contributing towards the society. They try their best to take our online classes.
I myself saw a Professor of mine learning to master the online classes app so that we can be provided with best resources. But, is that really possible at times of 2g? Ponder over it. Even though we somehow workout and compromise our classes a bit and take up as much as we can get from online classes but first it takes fifteen minutes to connect and keeps on disconnecting again and again. However, if someone manages to get somewhat par level signal but till then half of the time of lecture is always
wasted.
I remember those days when our Math tutor was repeatedly getting disconnected and even though the lecture time passed, we all were waiting for lecture to start. Few of our teachers somehow managed to connect but we were not able to listen or see anything. The video was so blurry and the voice was so lagging that it made our head burst out.
Being a civil engineering student engineering drawing subject is one of the important subjects, our teacher gave enough as she could to teach us online but we were not able to recognize the diagrams we were being taught to draw. There are fine and dark lines in drawing representing different elements but what could we see? Nothing but white screen with some dots moving here and there.
Many of my classmates were regular and luckily had appreciable 2g internet connectivity. But after interval of few days internet was regularly snapped. This proved to be disastrous to our learning as well as out attendance. As we have to note that attendance plays a big role in eligibility for exams.
Some students somehow managed to study from friends, siblings, parents, etc. but when they appear in examinations, either the paper is not loaded on 2g or they are unable to submit despite attempting it all.
I recall my engineering mechanics paper, at that time internet was snapped in Pulwama district, but I thank one of my friends who owns a café and let me use his broadband for exam otherwise I could have easily failed that day.
No doubt all the teachers of Jammu and Kashmir struggled hard to prove themselves honest towards their profession but internet ruined it all.
Students throughout Jammu and Kashmir gave their best like rest of the world to excel in their field but again internet ruined it all.
If any student who gave everything towards his/her studies, fails in examination due to this lagging internet connection, who will be held responsible?
Will the bureaucracy take responsibility for destroying future of students? Let’s ponder over it.
