April 29, 2019 | BK DESK/SRINAGAR

A local NGO Ehsaas International on Sunday launched a versatile program on women menstrual health and hygiene in association with Dept of Social & Preventive Medicine, Govt Medical College, Srinagar.
The first leg of the program was kick-started on Sunday at the village Zamora in Sumbal and will be followed by more such camps in other areas, a statement issued to the press read.
“The program named as "PANEIN FIKIR: Let's Care About Ourselves" is an awareness initiative highlighting the use and proper disposal of sanitary pads among female folk of the society," said Hakim Mohd. Ilyas, General Secretary of Ehsaas.
“There is a large population of females in the valley who are not aware of the use of sanitary pads. However, many are reluctant to use it due to a number of reasons even though they are aware of it. At the same time, it is found that a good number of females do not have financial means to buy and use sanitary pads which put a direct risk on their health,” said Dr Auqfeen Nisar who is pursuing MD in Community Medicine at GMC, Srinagar and is in charge of the outreach program.
Chairman of Ehsaas, Syed Tabasum Geelani said that under this initiative, they are intending to provide awareness on the use of sanitary pads and its proper disposal.
“We would provide sanitary pads free of cost in areas where the concept of its use is new to people. Subsequently, pads will be made available at subsidized rates to encourage females to use it. Also, social taboos attached to this concern of females will be addressed taking the help from religious preachers,” Syed Tabassum said.
The program was implemented in association with Dept of Social and Preventive Medicine, Govt Medical College, Srinagar who provided experts for the initiative.
On the sidelines of the awareness camp, consultation to needy patients was provided by Dr Syed Masooma Rizvi, a leading gynaecologist of the valley.
