We are losing our precious land to encroachers by each passing day. In Srinagar encroachers and dog menace has increased manifold and Government appears to go silent on such issues. The Jammu Kashmir High Court, in a significant order, asked the government to file a status report suggesting mechanism for removal of encroachments on huge chunks of state land restoring it to its original status. The directions had come after the public interest litigation drew court’s attention towards encroachment of nearly 20 lakh kanals of state land across Jammu Kashmir involving senior politicians, bureaucrats and police officers, besides land mafia.

The government many times has not come up with a report proposing mechanism for eviction of encroachers from state land so far. Appropriate directions for removal of encroachments within a stipulated time need to be issued by the court as respective Divisional Commissioners of both Jammu and the Kashmir provinces have already submitted before it more than 13 volumes disclosing names of people encroaching upon state land in every district, he added. The officials have admitted that the forest cover is shrinking in Jammu and Kashmir, the government even earlier have been said over 12,000 hectares of demarcated forest land is under encroachment of various persons, including a former minister and some luxury hotels, even as efforts are on to recover the land. “It is a fact that the forest cover is shrinking unabated in the JK . Shrinking of forest cover is due to degradation of the demarcated forests, caused by various biotic pressures including human beings, 12,030.49 hectares of demarcated forest land was under encroachment in the state, while diversion of 11,924 hectares for non-forestry purposes under Forest (Conservation) Act for developmental purposes caused reduction of forest cover.
