Enough is Enough!

May 16, 2022 |

The political pot is boiling over days after terrorists eliminated a Kashmiri Pandit (KP) government employee in broad daylight inside his office.
Local politicians, community and civil society representatives have been meeting in their individual capacities to chalk out strategies to counter the hydra of violence against soft targets and make representations to the union territory administration.
The latest to join this bandwagon is the People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), which called on Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday to flag their concerns on recent civilian killings.
Sunday’s interaction came a day after the PAGD met at the residence of Farooq Abdullah, Lok Sabha MP & National Conference (NC) Patron to discuss the recent civilian killings and the final report of the Jammu and Kashmir Delimitation Commission.
Following Saturday’s meeting, the PAGD decided that they would call on the Lt Governor on Sunday to flag the alliance’s security-related concerns.
PAGD spokesman Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami revealed that this decision was taken after meeting a group of Kashmiri Pandits, who informed the PAGD constituents that they were planning to leave Kashmir in view of its insecure environment.
It is to the Lt Governor and the UT administration’s credit that they have moved and responded quickly to deal with the situation arising out of Thursday’s murder of KP government employee Rahul Bhat.
Lt Governor Sinha’s assurances to the PAGD delegation comprising Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, M.Y. Tarigami, Hasnain Masoodi and Muzaffar Shah that all necessary action to ensure the safety and security of Kashmiri Pandit PM Package Employees is being taken is heartening.
That security forces have been given complete freedom to retaliate and avenge the killing of innocents and to punish those aiding and abetting terrorists is a move only to be expected in the current tense situation.
It is also reassuring to see the UT administration forming a special cell in the LG secretariat to deal exclusively with matters relating to the safety and security of PM Package Employees and their rehabilitation.
Sinha’s statement that his “doors are always open for the people”, and that there is a need for “all sections of polity and society” to put up a “united front to eliminate the terror ecosystem”, is timely and indicative of the administration’s sincerity to deal with the problem head-on.
The murder of 35-year-old Kashmiri Pandit government employee Rahul Bhat in broad daylight could very well be that spark that sends out a strong message from civil society and the administration that “enough is enough”.
