Expansion work on SIA to takeoff in April

This April, the work on the expansion of Srinagar International Airport is likely to take off as authorities claim that they have completed all associated processes.
The area of the SIA is to be expanded to accommodate more flights and to cater to an increasing rush of the passengers.
The plan was announced by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) had last year .Director AAI, Srinagar, Sharad Kumar, said that they have got the approval to start work on the project in April. The project, he said, would consume, at least, four years.
“See, since last year we were busy in getting the approval for expansion of the airport. But now the documentation process has completed and by next month, the work shall begin on the project,” he said.
Kumar said the airport, which is around 16,700 square meters in area, will have another 33,000 square meters added to it.
“It will be expanded towards the international departure side. The area to be expanded has been fixed as 33,000 square meters,” he said.
Recently, the AAI and the Indian Air Force gave their nod to the project in order to upgrade the facilities and runway area at the airport.
Kumar said that the airport would have two additional aircraft stands to accommodate more flights.
“It will accommodate scores of the new flights, as the airport will be having two additional aircraft stands, which will make the total stands up to 11,” he said.
An official at the airport said that the expansion process would be followed by upgrading of the facilities and infrastructure at the airport.
“It would require the facilities like installation of conveyor belts, escalators, CCTV cameras, firefighting mechanism, and sprinklers. All the latest equipment will be installed to ensure the facilities of international standards to the passengers,” he said.
The Union Tourism Ministry, in its report titled ‘20 years of Perspective and Sustainable Tourism in JK’, has recommended expansion of the Srinagar International Airport, state airline services, and helicopter taxi services to attract tourists from across the world.
