 Fearing privatization of electricity, Pattan residents stage protest, block Srinagar-Baramulla highway

Dozens of protesters from Pattan, which included mostly women, on Monday blocked Srinagar- Baramulla national highway at Pattan for 2 hours and staged protests against authorities for taking steps for the “Privatization of Electricity.”
The agitating protestors said that the government is taking steps for the privatization of electricity and they have initiated this the process from Pattan on an experimental basis.
“We won't allow any kind of privatization with electricity at any cost and will oppose the move tooth and nail,” the protestors said.
“We are requesting higher authorities that we belong to poor families and we cannot not manage high electricity dues,” they said.
Meanwhile, SDM Pattan and Executive Magistrate reached on spot and they assured protesters that the administration is not taking any a step towards privatization policy however it is a Centre-sponsored scheme to renovate the power system in JK.
However, protesters denied the authorities claim and threatened to continue protest if any kind of such work restarts again.
