Aimed to promote the floriculture in Tangdhar of Jammu and Kashmir's hilly Karnah valley, a collaboration with Sher-e-Kashmier University of Agricultural Sciences and Tech (SKUAST) under the aegis of Vigyan Prasar Department of Science & Technology, a stakeholders meet-cum-workshop was org at Youth Centre Tangdhar on 06 Aug 22 for the farmers of Scheduled Tribes(ST). The day-long workshop, attended by progressive and prospective farmers who are economically deprived & have very less knowledge with regards to economic benefits of undertaking cultivation of flowers for commercial purpose. The workshop primarily aimed at locating the available opportunities and different challenges to flower farming more profitably and scientifically. The programme witnessed the presence of 47 farmer, 03 scientist & Mr Zahoor Ahmad Lone, Agriculture Extension Officer, Tangdhar.
The wksp began with Dr Nasir Hamid Masoodi sensitizing the farmers of ST community of Karnah distt of Kupwara regarding scope of bio resource management, highlighting the scope of raising ornamentals bulb flowers nurseries for ensuring sustainable livelihood security for the backward farmers. There was a healthy discussion with ST’s of different villages of Kanah Tehsil regarding the scope of tapping the high value crop selection which can give high returns from small land holding. The priority areas were delaminated as bulb flower production of niche crops like tulip, lilium etc, raising of hybrid seedlings, establishment of demo units, module of crop selection, propagation and linkage of flowers produce to the floral industry for sustainable entrepreneurship development. The event also witnessed farmers of ST community volunteering for making their land available for est of green house farms as sponsored by Central Govt Schemes for the UT of Jammu and Kashmir.
