Free for all in Private Hospitals

November 30, 2021 |

Kashmir for the past seven decades has seen minimal growth of the private sector as the government of the day promoted the public sector at its cost with the result people yearned for jobs which were protected by the state. Right from the days of Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad, every politician has attempted to encourage nepotism at the cost of merit. The demand of jobs in government offices pushed desperate youth to succumb to demands of those at helm and it occurred in both provinces of Kashmir and Jammu as kin or known were employed gainfully at places of their own choice. Similarly, the situation had its own shadow on every sphere of life as was evident from the no growth in private sector. However, some years in this decade saw slight rise in this arena with those who were unable to get jobs had to opt for other means. This also saw setting up of hospitals in Srinagar but by few who are having free for all in terms of managing financially. To many gullible patients, they are charging more than what should be and this comes at a cost for them. Having said this, patients too have options to go for hospitalization in the government sector but they see private hospitals where they would get better service for a certain amount. Now what is required at this stage where the private sector is booming in Jammu and Kashmir is to have strict regulations in place and patients should be told about the choices in case of the admission but based on standard practices regulated by the concerned authority. In this case, Directorate of Health Services is the nodal office which is responsible for the regulation of private hospitals and it has failed miserably in doing this due to reasons known to the officials concerned. The UT administration should direct the strict implementation of codal procedures in regulation of all private hospitals since it concerns everyone who had no options but to get admission for immediate treatment since the specialized doctors practice or operate there. The anomaly in terms of one specialized doctor getting a salary from a government hospital and similarly adding to the kitty from a private one too. The unregulated private sector needs immediate attention for patient care which should be top priority of the administration.
