Geelani, Mirwaiz remain under house arrest in Srinagar

Chairmen of both the factions of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq remained under house arrest in Kashmir where protests by students have increased against the use of disproportionate force by security forces on students in different educational institutes since April 15.
There was, however, no restriction on Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Yasin Malik, who was released on April 15 from detention after one month.
“Mr Geelani remained under house arrest since May last year,” amalgam spokesman Aiyaz Akbar told UNI.
A large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed outside his Hyderpora residence, he added.
The moderate Hurriyat chairman also remained under house arrest, a spokesman for the amalgam said.
Security forces and state police personnel remained deployed outside his Nigeen house. He has been under house arrest for the past around a month, the spokesman said.
