Give scavengers same safety rights, compensation as organised workers: RS

December 07, 2019 | UNI/NEW DELHI

A demand was raised in the Rajya Sabha on Friday that workers of the unorganised sector working on sewers, wells and high towers be given the same safety rights and compensation as the organised sector workers.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Dr Satyanarayan Jatiya, BJP, observed that the death anniversary
of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar was being observed all over the country and on this occasion, these workers could be given equal protection rights, which, he said, would be a fitting tribute to Babasaheb.
PL Punia, Congress, demanded an action plan for the uplift of child labour. He said there were more than 150 million child labourers worldwide.
In India alone, 7 to 8 crore children were deprived of the right to education, of which one crore were employed. A large number of such children were trafficked from Nepal into India. He said the government should formulate an action plan for their uplift.
Sasmit Patra, BJD, while referring to the state of Odisha which was prone to natural disasters from
time to time, said the recent cyclonic storm Fani in the state caused destruction estimated at Rs 24,000 crore. He demanded that Odisha and other disaster-prone states be given relief measures and compensation on the lines of states with special status.
To compensate the loss due to such disasters, the Centre should arrange to provide 90 per cent of the relief and 10 per cent should be borne by the states.
Madhusudan Mistry, Congress, raised the issue of timely release of MPs' Development Fund.
He said the fund, which was due to be released to him for development works from his MP's Funds for 2019, had not been given yet. He had submitted a plan for development works worth Rs 5 crore to various departments but due to non-release of funds, these works had come to a standstill. He said he would be retiring in the coming April so the amount should be released immediately.
