Goa Guv appoints Manohar Parrikar CM, asks to prove majority within 15 days

In a late night development, Goa Governor Mridula Sinha today appointed Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar as Chief Minister of the state.

According to a letter issued by Secretary to the Governor Rupesh Kumar Thakur, IAS, the Governor appointed Mr Parrikar, Leader of the Goa BJP Legislature Party as the Chief Minister of the state after Mr Parrikar submitted evidence before the Governor, the support of 13 MLAs of BJP, 3 MLAs of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), 3 MLAs of Goa Forward Party (GFP) and two independent MLAs.

The Governor has asked Mr Parrikar to ‘prove majority on the floor of the House in the Legislative Assembly Session within 15 days after administration of oath of office and secrecy,’ the letter said. Earlier, in a press conference Union Minister for Shipping, Roads and Highways Nitin Gadkari had said that Mr Parrikar would resign as Defence Minister before taking oath as Chief Minister.
