Some of the top officials from Jammu and Kashmir have been nominated by Government of India to have talks with incarcerated political leaders in Kashmir Valley who have been under arrest for more than two months, since the government ended special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and split it into two union territories.
The designated State officials have already approached some of the political leaders and have sent a detailed report to North Block in New Delhi. In the report, it has been mentioned that incarcerated political leaders were approached to know how they want to proceed with politics in the state after their release.
Sources added that Government of India is in no mood to take chances and is not ready to give released political leaders any opportunity of political activities. Some of the political leaders have already been released after they promised to abstain from indulging in any political activity particularly touching Article 370. “Only those leaders will be released who will not talk about the abrogation of Article 370 and foment trouble,” said an official wishing not to be named.
Official sources said that feelers have also been sent to the three former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir - National Congress's Omar Abdullah, his father Farooq Abdullah and Peoples Democratic Party's Mehbooba Mufti.
"Among all three former CMs, Omar seems to have been more realistic to the situation. While his father still has taken a tough stance on Article 370," the senior government functionary adds. "Release of these three leaders would be a political call taken by Delhi," said a senior bureaucrat.
Background meetings with various political leaders indicate that the National Conference seems to be gearing up for a fight for full statehood of the state and the PDP seems to have taken a rigid stance on the removal of special status of Jammu and Kashmir. (KNT)
