IASOWA's Great Gesture

December 04, 2021 |

In the wake of alleged sale and adoption racket of Kashmiri orphans, the Union Territory administration promptly initiated action against those involved in the scam and Chief Secretary Arun Mehta led from the front by directing strict action against the accused who exploited Covid situation for this inhuman act. Apart from the gearing up of police and official machinery, the gesture in the afternoon by the IAS Officers Wives Association was moving as it was apparently compassionate as they distributed much needed stocking among orphans children. The donation drive was held at Banquet Hall in Srinagar in which blankets, thermals and socks and was supervised by President IASOWA Dr Amrita Mehta, wife of Chief Secretary Dr Arun Kumar Mehta and members of IASOWA Mehak Shahid, Sadaf Aijaz and Gitanjali Singla led the donation drive. For most of us, the idea of winter means making all arrangements for heating at homes, putting up warm clothing and sipping kahwa/coffee sitting beside the fire, it is our responsibility to take care of such people, especially children who are in need. The realty remains that for those in difficult conditions , with every drop in the temperatures it’s a fight for survival. They even promised that best help would be provided to extend maximum help to the underprivileged people during winter in the valley. There is no better gift than providing warm clothing to the needy during the winter season. Many elderly and children experience bitterness of winter and are at a great risk of suffering from severe illnesses. The dip in temperature levels makes them vulnerable, but at the same time it has given us an opportunity to serve humanity by donating winter accessories to the needy. There cannot be a bigger satisfaction than making someone’s life better during the harsh winter spell of the valley. Apart from the humane gesture by the wives of top officials including the wife of Chief Secretary who asked the Home department to ensure that every such orphanage and Nari Niketan was inspected by the nearest police station in the UT and a report shared by them with the Home department by the evening. The directions well taken should follow immediate inspection and record checking of all orphanages and social welfare centres. There should be no room for trafficking of children which is inhuman. There should be zero tolerance for such exploitation. It remains to be seen in coming weeks how the police administration would follow this sensitive case involving the orphans.
