The J&K government Tuesday said 41 persons were killed while 544 were injured in attacks by wild animals on humans in the last two years.
The government said 52 persons were wounded in Haveli constituency in Poonch district alone.
Giving details from 2014 to 2016, J&K’s minister for forests, Lal Singh informed the Lower House during Question Hour that in 2014-2015, 17 persons were killed and 244 were injured in wild animal attacks on humans in the state.
Singh said 24 persons died and 300 were injured in 2015-2016 in the attacks. The minister was replying to a written question of Congress MLA from Banihal, Vikar Rasool, in the assembly Tuesday.
Singh said 22 persons have been injured in the wild animal attacks on humans in Banihal constituency.
In another written question of PDP MLA from Haveli in Poonch district, Shah Muhammad Tantray, the minister said that one person was killed and 52 persons have been injured in the wild animal attacks in Haveli constituency in the last five years.
The minister said that Rs 149.60 lakhs have been paid as compensation to these victims. “While Rs 119.3 lakhs compensation has been paid to those who died, Rs 30.30 lakhs were handed to those who were injured in the attacks,” Singh said.
The state of Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed alarming rise in man-animal conflicts due to increased deforestation and intrusions of humans into the natural habitat of animals. Experts have blamed the rise on increased militarization also. The state has also lost a huge forest cover to illegal timber smugglers which has pushed out the animals from their natural habitat into human habitations.
