Inaccessible YouTube hampers studies: Students

February 20, 2020 | QAISAR BABA/SRINAGAR

The internet gag in Kashmir valley has put students in a peculiar situation as they fail to stay connected with video sharing platform “YouTube” to watch lectures on different subjects which could have helped them to prepare in the examinations are on the cards.
“We are facing numerous problems as we could not listen or watch lectures on various subjects on YouTube due to Internet gag that could have helped us to prepare for the forthcoming examinations ”, a group of students told Brighter Kashmir.
They claimed that Kashmir valley is the only place perhaps in the world where students could not list or watch video lectures on YouTube, they said.
“YouTube has a variety of material to offer to the students,” they said adding the facility needs to be restored as soon as possible.
YouTube is an American video sharing platform widely used in academic circles for detailed and interactive lectures and information on all topics of science among other things but the students of Kashmir lose this important facility during this competitive period due to the authorities gag on internet.
It is pertinent to mention here that 2G Mobile Internet services were restored in Kashmir Valley on January 24, but 3G and 4G mobile Internet services are still suspended in addition to BSNL Broadband Internet Services as a precautionary measure. These services were suspended in the Kashmir valley after authorities scraped article 370 and 35A and bifurcate the state in two Union Territories---Jammu Kashmir and Ladakah ---on August 5, 2020.
A group of students engaged in the preparations of various competitive exams said that our preparations are having a negative impact on the lack of access to YouTube.
They said, “We are engaged in the preparation of various competitive exams, and YouTube was providing all information with a great deal and help us in preparing for the task.
“We can listen to detailed and meaningful lectures on any topic even also through the VPN but unfortunately we have lost the benefits of YouTube because of no access to social media. Even VPNs have also been scraped by directing the mobile companies to construct “fire walls” to snub its use.
A student who wanted to enroll herself for a Post Graduate (PG) course at a renowned university in Delhi said that “I didn't have to go to Delhi to seek admission if access to YouTube could have been possible”.
She said, I am going to seek admission in a University at Delhi and if YouTube access could have been possible it would have helped me to prepare for the entrance test of the PG and it was not necessary for me to seek the help of a teacher. “YouTube is providing all information regarding studies.
Anyone who can repeat a complex problem a thousand times, the teacher may get angry at repeating it but if you do not understand a lecture you have a direct access on “YouTube” you can list it as many times as you wish to understand.
A research scholar of an institute said that to down load a lecture from YouTube he had to go to the office of his friend where broadband service through a fixed lane was available.
“ I am doing research on a subject and by watching YouTube it was easy for me to listen or watch required lectures on various subjects which was enabling me to prepare for studies” But when there is no access to the YouTube I have to go to the friends office where from I am doing down load of various required articles”.
