Incidents of arson, 4 shops torched in Srinagar

November 22, 2019 | JUNAID DAR /SRINAGAR

A day after the union home minister said normalcy has been restored in the Valley, a spontaneous shutdown brought normal life to a grinding halt with incidents of arson reported from Srinagar on Thursday
In the summer capital which had witnessed traffic jams over the past few days and a majority of business establishments had opened, reports said threatening posters were pasted in different parts of city.
“This forced shopkeepers to remain indoors. Shopkeepers, who used to open up during morning hours, remained shut. There was visible decrease in traffic on roads. Even school vans and buses stopped functioning,” reports said.
According to reports, unknown persons torched at least four shops at Zainakadal area of old Srinagar city.
Sources said that before setting them on fire, unknown persons had painted a warning message ‘Last Warning’ on the shutters of these shops, a local news agency said.
A police official said a case has been registered in this regard and investigation set into motion, the agency said.
Reports said all the shops and business establishments in old Srinagar city areas remained shut and skeletal movement of transport was observed on the roads. Vendors were seen doing normal business in Batamaloo and other area of Srinagar city.
Reports from other Kashmir districts said that uncertainty continued to prevail. “Some shops were seen open, others closed. Some roads wore a deserted look while traffic plied normally on other roads. There is uncertainty and a wave of fear among people.”
Meanwhile, shops and businesses were shut and public transport remained largely off the roads in most parts of Kashmir, after posters warning shopkeepers against opening their establishments appeared in some areas.
The posters calling for shutdown also appeared a day before Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in Parliament that normalcy had returned to the valley.
Officials said the shutdown was observed in Srinagar and Ganderbal districts in central Kashmir, Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama and Shopian districts in south Kashmir and in some areas in the north.
Shop owners did not open their establishments during the morning hours they did over the past few weeks, they said.
Public transport remained largely off the roads in the city and elsewhere in the valley. However, a few auto-rickshaws and inter-district cabs were plying, the officials said.
Pre-paid mobile phones and all internet services continue to remain suspended since August 5, when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution and bifurcate Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories.
Most of the top level and second-rung separatist politicians have been taken into preventive custody while mainstream leaders including two former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have been either detained or placed under house arrest.
The government has detained former chief minister and sitting Lok Sabha MP from Srinagar Farooq Abdullah under the controversial Public Safety act, a law enacted by his father and National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah in 1978 when he was the chief minister.
