Kashmir: Soldier killed, operation called off as militants manage to escape in Kulgam

An Army soldier was killed and two others injured in an encounter with militants in south Kashmir districts of Kulgam, where security force have called off the operation after the ultras managed to escape following clashes that left four civilians dead and 50 others injured on Wednesday.
Earlier, it was reported that two militants were killed in the encounter as the house in which the ultras were trapped was blasted by security forces. “After conducting thorough search of the debris and nearby areas, we could not recover the bodies of the militants,” official sources told UNI.
They said the search operation has been called off and security forces have been withdrawn from the area as the militants have managed to escape.
They said that troops of Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police, Rashitriya Rifles (RR) and CRPF launched a joint search operation at Wani Mohalla, Khudwani Wanpoh in Kulgam district in the wee hours today. However, when the security forces were sealing the area, militants hiding there, opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons. Troops also retaliated resulting in fierce encounter. Three security force personnel were injured who have been admitted to Army hospital, they said adding one of the injured soldier succumbed.
The martyred soldier has been identified as Sepoy Sada Gunakara Rao.
They said security forces blasted the house from where the militants were firing at them following which the firing stopped. “But, after searching the entire area, no body of any militant was recovered,” they added.
Four teenagers were killed and several others were injured when security forces allegedly opened fire and fired pellets to disperse demonstrators, who tried to march towards the encounter site.
