Killing Spree

October 08, 2021 |

Unabated killings are sending shivers down the spine as a sense of fear among people, including minorities in Kashmir is palpable with security agencies unable to act and put an end to the spiral of endless violence in a week. It’s all happening in Srinagar and not far off rural belt where scores of militants have been killed by security forces in these months as men in uniform claim to have robust human intelligence networks to trap the subversive elements inimical to peace in the valley. However, Srinagar has been red zone for them as the level of success to curb such killings have been almost nil as evident from Thursday’s morning incident in interior Eidgah area where a lady principal belonging to Sikh community from Srinagar and a Hindu teacher from Jammu were killed in school premises bringing back horrible memories of nineties thereby implying that situation is not conducive as it looks as peace has been disturbed by these senseless killings. As analysis is undertaken in the wake of this situation, it has been observed that Muslims were among the majority of those dead due to militant killings this year reflecting that religious background is of no consideration for such dastardly acts. The government should immediately take proactive steps to instill confidence among the vulnerable minority community who are feeling sense of insecurity and it is the moral and religious obligation of majority members to intervene and rekindle trust among Pandit brethren and outsiders who are in valley to earn livelihood as Kashmiris too live in other states to sustain their hearth back home. A silent majority has always strived for peaceful existence and harmony but it never transformed into major voice to provide timely succor to the victims in light of such incidents in the past and let this be the moment wherein kin of those killed don’t feel isolated or neglected in time of grief. A matter of concern for all is how the attackers identified and targeted Principal Supinder Kour and teacher Deepak Chand in the school premises amidst a number of school teachers present. Who orchestrated it and why? No justification or reasoning would replace the lives of innocents who were there to teach students of poor strata of society as the area belongs to middle and lower class members. The sobbing colleagues and shrieks of kin wondering why they would echo for ever as Kashmiris fear for their future.
