In a bid to strengthen the party base in Ladakh, the Central leadership of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is seriously mulling the restructuring of party in Ladakh that was officially declared as Union Territory (UT) on October 31. The BJP is planning to appoint a separate party chief for UT Ladakh with the sole aim of strengthening the party base in new UT.
“Yes there is a proposal before the party leadership in New Delhi about introducing the new party chief for the Ladakh UT. BJP has fulfilled the long pending demand of people of Ladakh that the region be given UT status,” a senior BJP leader in New Delhi said.
He said that under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendera Modi, the UT demand of people of Ladakh stands fulfilled, the BJP leadership is focusing on strengthening party roots in Leh and the first step in that direction will be to appoint a new unit of party in the new UT.
“Party is likely to appoint new BJP president for Ladakh and also the new office bearers while as for J&K UT the present arrangement will continue though some changes may be done in the existing set up,” the BJP leader said.
Sources in the J&K unit of BJP said that party high command is working on a plan to set up a separate unit of the party in Leh. “There is a unanimous consensus about appointing a new party chief for Leh and also the new office bearers,” the sources said.
They said that to being with, consultations are on with the members of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) to evolve a consensus on appointing a new party chief and office bearers. “Some names have been shortlisted for the post of new party chief while as final call will be taken in a fortnight,” the sources revealed said.
A senior BJP leader said that after giving UT status to Ladakh, people in the cold desert have extended full support to BJP leadership in Centre and also to the J&K leadership of the party. “People of Ladakh and those at the helm at LAHDC have reposed full faith in party leadership in setting up new unit of party in Ladakh,” he said.
