Let’s Rethink World

March 31, 2020 |

The healthcare sector finds itself in a very bad shape today. The super powers of the world have been reduced to super paupers of the world. In a New York hospital, medical staff is using wrapping plastic for body covers due to the lack of certified personal protection equipment. In Italy, some 40 doctors have died in helping the country fight back the novel corona virus. Slowly and steadily, the humanity is coming to realise that the arsenal of nuclear bombs, fighter jets, precision missiles, thousands of landmarks, industrial centres, shopping hubs, etc, etc, in which we invested our lifetimes along with billions and billions of dollars have come to a naught in the face of a three micron thing which can’t even survive on its own. Nature is a great leveller, after all. Wuhan, the commercial hub in China which, so to say, traded in the virus, where the first case is believed to have been reported last year, is today showing a promising picture which gives hope to the rest of the world. After a two month lockdown, the spread of the virus has been contained, and the first baby steps towards the restoration of commercial operation in the province of millions, have been taken on March 29. In India, while the number of confirmed cases remains abysmally low, experts warm that the could be the case because of the lack of aggressive testing. There can be a ten or twenty fold increase in the official numbers. Warning shots are being fired that the country could see an explosion of cases as testing is intensified in coming days, weeks and months. In these grim times, when the very survival of humanity is at stake, there is a need for rethinking on the social, political and cultural orders set up and enforced on the larger world by the capitalist world. Which brings us to the basic premise of this piece; are we doing enough to the people around us, those who are not in a position where they can afford to sit at home and still have enough to feed their families. There are many such people around us. The empire of capitalism does not cover them. As conscientious citizens, are we doing enough for them so that they don’t feel ignored in the battle of man versus nature. Think about it!
