Make it Healthy

June 12, 2020 |

Make the healthcare system in Jammu and Kashmir healthy as it's is rumbling. With the Government taking lot of initiatives, there is very less seen on the ground. To see the healthcare system in J&K only through the prism of hospitals that are not in good conditions may not be a fitting idea, particularly for evaluation. Reason being that there are some serious worries other than hospitals that the government, authorities and people have to take care of post haste. Some of these issues are not restricted to J&K only, but can be seen harming the health care at a larger regional level. In India two issues have been disturbing the health care professionals and medical fraternity lately – one is the failure to check quality and pricing of drugs and medical equipment, and the other is the long standing battle between generic and branded drugs. Recently, the price of stents has put people, manufacturers and politics on the same page with the government (Centre) trying to exert pressure on manufacturers to regulate the price. Provided there is progress made in this way, price and quality regulation of branded drugs may come next. It was in 2008 that the central government started Jan Aushadi, a scheme set to provide good quality medicine at lower rates by establishing generic drugs stores. The scheme has not achieved even half of what was expected when it was launched. The policy although pro-people has invited the wrath of drug manufacturers who one way or the other try to sabotage the move of less expensive but quality generic drugs. In J&K the issue of substandard drugs has seen a decisive response, but caution must also be maintained as it could indirectly be encouraging the demand and sale of expensive branded drugs. There is one more issue that has left the bells ringing in Kashmir – the increased use or rather abuse of drugs like psychotropic drugs. The abuse of some of these drugs which are prescribed in the treatment of certain medical conditions, is a grave matter that needs critical decisions at different levels including the policy level and societal. The menace is slowly spreading and eating the vitals of our society as young people suffering from anxiety are getting snared in the illicit drug use trap. What is worrying is that boys as young as 12-14 years are becoming victims while our attention is riveted on condition of hospitals and few other issues. The health care is J&K needs a multi-pronged strategy and policy to address all pressing concerns before its too late for the government as well as for the people of the JK.
