Migrant Workers Must Stay Put

October 19, 2021 |

There has been an immense contribution of migrant workers in any society as they toil hard with fewer amounts hardly commensurate with their work and leaving in huff because of fear due to killings in recent days. Naturally, their worry is genuine as life is precious for them and their kin back home. Their struggle is agonizing with the kind of labour they put in to earn daily wages and send it back home for sustenance while living life on peanuts. Their exit could impact the quality of work and push rates up as Kashmir’s own labour output is minimal and hardly suffice the demand which was filled by outside workers mostly from Bihar or Eastern Uttar Pradesh. They belong to the poor strata of the society which pushes them to work outside as they opted for Kashmir for its pleasant weather during summer when back home reeled under heat wave across their states. Their killings should be condemned as no religion allows targeting innocents whose untimely death not only brings pain to them but also to their poor kin back home. No amount of compensation would help their family as it would be lifelong agony and apathy for the sufferers. In Kashmir, they have built paths to palatial houses and not a single house or households have been attended by them though on wages but the kind of pain and labour is immense as compared to local workforce who find ways to skip jobs on a daily basis. Off late they too had got influenced by locals but not to an extent that they would be disliked for the hard work they put in while delivering results in construction jobs. During COVID lockdown the brick kiln owners got them hired and transported via air since the demand for bricks boomed and prices skyrocketed. The administration should act fast and disallow their migration as it would amount to hampering the economy of Kashmir where the situation is already bad due to continuous lockdowns over the years. Be it paddy fields, apple orchards, daily chores, sanitation work, etc., you name it they would be present and working by the dint of their hard work and nothing else. Their migration would not only impact the lives of Kashmiris who work outside and are in similar situations like them and earning for their kin back home. Here, the role of religious organizations, political parties, NGOs, various Trusts and mohalla committees is vital for their reach and intervention. All should speak in one voice to stop poor migrants from leaving Kashmir.
