Mobile Phone: An Asset or a Liability

June 29, 2020 | Arif Nabi

Current world is a world of technology. Technology has touched every sphere of our life. Whether we are home or go to somewhere else, we see technology all around us. Not a single domain of life is there, that could be without the scientific machinery and equipment. Of the various assets today’s world has given us, one of the most useful among them is the ‘Mobile phone’. Mobile phone has radically revolutionized the modern society. It has shaped the modern life in a drastic way. There is hardly if any, who doesn’t know the name of a mobile phone. The demand of more and more cell phones is ever increasing, since its inception in the last part of twentieth century. According to United Nations report the spread of mobile phones has been much faster than any other technology.
Mobile phones are used in a variety of contexts, such as keeping in touch with kith and kin, for executing business, spreading useful information and in case of any exigency, just to mention few uses here. It has even superseded televisions and Radios. It has made today’s life both faster and easier. By using a cell phone we can see, visualize and learn about places, we may not be able to see or visit in real life. With such a small beautiful asset in our hand, we can observe how the life is going on all over the globe. Through mobile phones we can monitor and gauge the pollution level of our environment and consequently could take steps to improve and keep it clean. Higher price mobile phones are like pocket computers that have most of the features and functions of a typical computer. However, like many of the gadgets, mobile phone has got merits as well as demerits. If used wisely, its benefits however far outweigh its limitations. But, we have misused is so much so that it has become a liability now rather than being an asset. Right from adults to infants, everyone is badly addicted to it. We spend much of our precious time on unnecessary use of cell phones. I have myself seen vivid examples of how in a family each and every inmate is involved with its cell phone and no one is talking. There is a complete hush in the family. What to speak of children, even parents are busy with their phones, at a time when they should be giving due attention to their wards. I wonder what advice they are going to give their children. On the one hand, mobile phone is very much useful, on the other hand it has brought downfall to a large number of families. In some cases, it has even crumbled what is considered to be the strongest bond of the universe - the bond between husband & wife. Nevertheless, these gadgets have helped us to unite with our distant relatives and friends, but at the same time they have created a wide gap between otherwise closely stayed family members. That consonance which used to be an essential feature of our families is nowhere seen now.
Mobile phones have taken a heavy toll on our youth. They are the most affected ones by it. Instead of being used in a genuine way, they are using it for reasons which are trivial and unimportant. Playing useless games is what our young adults have thought the mobile phones to be used for. They buy mobile phones not for its benefits, but for how good it is for playing a specific game. This nuisance has to stop. We have to do away the misuse of mobile phones, otherwise a time is not far when there will be a complete crush of our families and of our youth (Allah forbid).
Cell phones have made our life completely sessile. Rather than tending to our health by doing physical exercises, we prefer to sit and do unnecessary scrolling. Good number of diseases has surfaced, owing to sedentary lifestyle - one of the most important reason of which is having a cell phone. In a recent research from Harvard University, it has been observed that people, who involve themselves with others and promote social interactions, are less likely to suffer from depression. It means social or family union is what can produce promising results for our current depression spree. I don’t know anyone who suffers from depression and is not using a cell phone. Conversely, I don’t know a person who is sans depression and is using a cell phone. Cell phone can either be an asset or a liability, now it depends on us how we make use of it. The early we stop its unnecessary use, the more healthy and strong we are going to make our family and society.
