Mustafa Colony residents demand action against gamblers, drug addicts

The residents of Mustafa Colony Rambagh have complained about frequent gambling and drug abuse in the area.
Locals said that the scores of the men from the vicinity can be seen assembling at various spots in Mustafa Colony who gamble and consume drugs.
“It has become a routine for a group of men mostly youth who arrive here in the morning and gamble throughout the day. We have asked them many times to leave the spot but they are never bother about it ,” they said.
The residents said their children and women can’t step out as the gamblers consume drugs and are involved in anti-social activities.
“Often we spot these men puffing cigarettes and consuming drugs. It will have a drastic impact on the upbringing of our children and social fabric in particular,” they said.
“We don’t allow our kids to venture out now as these drug addicts lure boys to join them” said Feroz Ahmad a resident.
The residents said that they had earlier conveyed the issue of rising drug abuse and gambling to the government.
“Even we made several representations last year and some men were arrested by the police. But again the menace has emerged and we fear they might be involved in thefts. Police should take a note of it so the entire locality will have a sigh of relief,” Ahmad said.
When contacted the concerned police station, an official assured that they would look into the matter.
“We haven’t received any such complaint as such this year. But we assure you that a proper action will follow against these abusers,” SDPO Sadder, Sandeep Bhat said.
Police said that its helpline should be contacted in case of such issues.
“We request all the citizens to dial 100 when their respective areas face any kind of issue whether it be gambling or drug abuse. We will depute our flying squad to nab the culprits,” an official at Police Control Room Srinagar said.
