Announcing that the National Conference (NC) and Congress will fight two Lok Sabha seats in an alliance, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said Dr Farooq Abdullah will contest from Srinagar, while Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir will contest from Anantnag.
Mr Abdullah, who is also the working president of the main opposition NC, said that both the parties have agreed to contest one seat each.
He said the NC had authorised party president Dr Farooq Abdullah to take final decision on the selection of candidates and also to enter into an alliance with the Congress.
After the NC-Congress meeting, both the parties have agreed for an alliance to prevent division of opposition votes, he added.
Polling in Srinagar and Anantnag Parliamentary constituencies will be held on April 9 and 12.
Dr Farooq was defeated during the 2014 elections by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Tariq Hamid Karra from Srinagar seat.
However, the Srinagar Parliamentary seat fell vacant in September last year, after the ruling PDP leader Karra resigned from the Lok Sabha and party membership. Mr Karra later joined the Congress.
The Anantnag seat also fell vacant after Mehbooba Mufti resigned, following her appointment as Chief Minister after the death of her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, last year.
