NC in Conundrum

October 16, 2021 |

With key man gone and another veteran mulling to go, Kashmir’s oldest and largest local political party, National Conference is facing internal bickering which it is resisting tooth and nail even as party stalwarts are maintaining wait and watch policy till the cat is out of the bag. Devender Singh Rana, who was holding vital post in the party organization and was close to both Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah so much so that they preferred him over veterans as advisor to then CM in 2008, left the party in disarray as none could believe their ears about his joining the Bharatiya Janata Party and be part of his elder brother’s party which he had politically fought as opposition member. What changed in post August 5, 2019 situation that led Rana to resign from NC and join BJP remains a mystery till both father-son duo express it in open or in party forum but internally political workers are seeking answers to this big query. Now the reports about veteran MLA from Chrar and former finance minister Abdur Rahim Rather are also doing rounds which he has dispelled as mere rumours. In Kashmir, there were strong rumours about abrogation of Article 370 which were negated by then governor Satyapal Malik and even the then Divisional Commissioner Baseer Khan till August 4, 2019 is on record that nothing sort would happen only to impose strict curfew from the next day. Rather, who is in Mumbai, countered the speculation saying he is the pioneer of the party who had established its base politically and can’t think of leaving it. However, the reports of wrangling inside the party over the alleged role of his son in the bank fraud case is impacting him as Rather wants his colleagues to take a stand in his favour during a crisis situation. Hilal Rather is on bail in a Rs 177 crore bank fraud case. He was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for his alleged involvement in misappropriation of crores of rupees from the term loans sanctioned by J&K Bank for his ambitious township project known as Paradise Avenue at Narwal Bala, Jammu in 2012. The case was later taken over by the CBI. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had also conducted multiple raids in connection with the money laundering case linked to the bank fraud probe against Hilal. Rather and his son have refuted charges and are legally pleading the case in the court of law.
