Srinagar, May 18: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday said terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir has been pushed to the margins, asserting that recruitment into terror ranks has become “almost negligible.”
In an interview to a national television channel, Sinha said security agencies are maintaining strict surveillance across digital platforms to track extremist activity. “Whether it is Telegram, WhatsApp or any other platform, agencies are monitoring every aspect and the situation will remain under control,” he said.
He said terror networks and narcotics smuggling were interconnected, alleging that drugs were being pushed into Jammu and Kashmir from across the Line of Control through sectors such as Gurez, Tangdhar and Uri, as well as via drones. “Drugs are directly linked to terror funding and terrorism,” he said.
Highlighting the anti-drug campaign, the LG said the administration had intensified action following complaints about rising addiction among youth. He said multiple sections of society, including religious leaders, students, women and youth groups, were now participating in the drive.
“In the last 38 days, 766 FIRs have been registered, 856 arrests made and 677 kilograms of drugs seized,” he said, adding that enforcement measures including passport verification, Aadhaar tracking, lookout notices and property demolition were being used to dismantle drug networks.
Sinha said nearly 90 percent of police personnel are currently engaged in anti-narcotics operations. He added that public cooperation had increased, with people voluntarily sharing information about drug peddlers. “No innocent person has been touched. Those found guilty will be punished,” he said.
He also said rehabilitation facilities were being strengthened through government hospitals and dedicated centres under the health department.
Referring to the April 22, 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, Sinha said people in Jammu and Kashmir had strongly condemned terrorism and expressed support for peace. “People of Kashmir now believe that their future lies with India and are against terrorism,” he said.
On infiltration, he said security forces were responding firmly. “None of their top commanders have survived. Infiltration attempts will also face the same fate,” he said, crediting the Army and CRPF for “precise operations” after the Pahalgam attack.
Sinha also stated that the Centre had fulfilled key commitments following the abrogation of Article 370 by completing delimitation and conducting peaceful elections. He said statehood would be restored as promised by the Prime Minister and Home Minister.
On the elected government, the LG said Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was “doing great work.”
