Ganderbal, Apr 27: School of Education (SoE), Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) began a one-week workshop (offline and online mode) on “Research and Publication Ethics,” for students, research scholars, and faculty members of the varsity and other higher educational institutions, from across the country here on Monday.
Addressing the participants, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Shahid Rasool, said, “Research is meant for the greater good of humanity, society, and the nation at large. However, much of what we see today is ritualistic driven by the need for degrees and promotions rather than genuine contribution.” “If research does not contribute to society or even to your own intellectual growth, then it defeats its very purpose.” Highlighting concerns around academic integrity, Prof. Shahid Rasool pointed to the growing issue of plagiarism. “We must be vigilant. In today’s digital age, accountability is higher than ever. Ethical lapses can have serious consequences, even at the highest levels,” he said. He lauded the workshop format, designed to meet the required academic credits while fostering meaningful engagement.
Sharing his experience in research administration, Registrar, Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir, stressed the critical importance of honesty and truthfulness in academic work. He recounted, “I have seen cases where research was simply copied and submitted without any effort at analysis or originality. Such practices undermine the very foundation of scholarship.” He highlighted inconsistencies in research findings and misuse of funding mechanisms, noting that “changing titles and resubmitting similar projects led to the discontinuation of several funding schemes.” “Research is not merely about earning a degree; it has policy implications and long-term impact. You must present your findings truthfully, whether they are favorable or not,” he added. He further remarked, “The University, under the dynamic leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. A Ravinder Nath, is progressing towards greater institutional growth, creating an enabling environment for meaningful and honest research.”
I/c Controller of Examinations, Prof. C Naseema was also present.
Earlier, in his address, Dean, SoE, Prof. Syed Zahoor Ahmad Geelani, apprised that the programme has attracted around 120 participants, with over 60 attending physically. He noted that the workshop aims to function as an intensive learning platform, combining expert lectures with interactive sessions. “We have invited experts in research methodology and ethics from various institutions to ensure a rich academic experience,” he said, expressing hope that participants would “leave with enhanced understanding and a sense of fulfillment.” Sr. Asst Prof. Dr. Firdous Ahmad Sofal conducted the programme proceedings and Sr. Asst Prof. Dr. Gawhar Ahmad Bhat proposed vote of thanks.
